Good, fresh, can be long wait, loved by locals and tourists alike

My favorite lunch spot in TC! You just can't beat their soups... 8 homemade soups daily- I never had one that was bad. You can even order the soup platter and get 3 cups of soup as a meal. Sandwiches are good as well, I love their turkey wrap. I wish we could get here for breakfast but they stop with breakfast after a certain time which is disappointing.

Staff is very friendly....service is very good. Very good selection of food choices, with good prices. Great muffins. Great skillets (try the hash bash)! This place is a treasure in downtown TC. JS
(5)B M.
Great soups and sandwiches. We almost always eat a lunch here when visiting TC. Highly recommended.
(4)Joy B.
We tried this place on a recommendation from a store down the street. Try the reuben sandwich with cherry sauerkraut -- surprisingly good. They make their own soups. We tried clam chowder and broccoli cheddar. Service was fast and friendly. They have brown paper on the table tops with a cup of crayons. Fun for doodling, and would be helpful for keeping the kids happy. In the lobby area they have posted on the walls many examples of customer "artwork" from the tables.
(4)Matt H.
SKILLET! Not much else I can say. Their skillet was awesome. Eggs, ham, hashbrowns. Extra ketchup, yes please! This place has a lot more to offer than I can review. Everyone I talk to loves some kind of pineapple muffin thing. Solid orange juice as well. Service was ridiculously slow one time and I got comped, so that was cool too.

I like this little place downtown. Their daily soup specials are usually pretty tasty, though I have had a couple of experiences where they were a little gummy and overly thick . . . perhaps from sitting on the heat too long? They have a wonderful salad . . . though I can't for the life of me recall the name . . . but it has small pieces of warm chicken on a bed of raw spinach with pasta mixed in and some mandarin oranges . . . unusual and very satisfying. I've had their chicken salad on a croissant (tasty) and their Reuben (with dried cherries mixed into the sauerkraut) is probably the best one I've ever had. Service in this place is often slow, both for breakfast and lunch . . . even on days when they don't appear to be very busy. I know they do a large take-out business for folks who work downtown and that may account for the lack of attention by the wait staff. Decent food at reasonable prices. I've been here many times for both breakfast and lunch and will continue to go back. I'm just glad that at least one restaurant has succeeded in this location.

Ordered for lunch early afternoon on a Friday. Decided to try the go on a limb and try the sweet red pepper crab soup, and holy yes! It made my day! So good it kinda made my half bacon egg salad sandwich seemed bland...I will be back to have another love affair with their soup! Oh, and didn't try one but the cookies looked pretty amazing also.
(4)John S.
We are locals. and this was the first time we ate ate here. We had great sandwiches (Cherry Chicken Salad, French Dip) and soups (Chili, Butternut Squash). Service was good. We'll definitely be back to try other dishes.
(4)Gloria C.
This was a nice place to have lunch. The inside is sort of dark because of all that kraft paper they put up of ugly face drawings that little kids make. It doesn't look good on the walls, but the food was fine. I had the Cherry Chicken Salad on Croissant and Tomato Florentine soup. The food was simple and tasty. The Chicken salad is made with cinnamon i believe. It was interesting. Boyfriend had a club sandwich that he said was very good. Prices are reasonable, a great place for a quick bite. I think they also have breakfast, but am not positive. I saw some enormous muffins and cookies that looked yummy though.
(4)Tim B.
Great breakfasts - my wife loved the baked oatmeal and the omelettes were excellent - great service - would be happy to have breakfast here every day
(5)Mateo B.
Affordable. Friendly. 7 people ate for $50. Baked Oatmeal and Muffins are the highlights. Eggs Benedict a close second. Hollandaise had perfect amount of Paprika and the toasted/fried English muffin was a nice touch. Hash Browns were disastrously undercooked: Probably a result of us being there at height of cherry festival. Perfect for the thrifty foodie after strolling along scenic Front street in the morning.
(4)Larry C.
Ok, I really appreciate it when I find a restaurant in town that serves healthy options ... and even more when it serves vegetarian made with quality local ingredients. Sorry, but this place was not doing it for me. Being able to eat outside in such a beautiful day was nice, but sliced processed cheese and cut up "lunch meat" on an uninspired salad was a real disappointment.
(3)David L.
Stop in for lunch and my wife got the half sandwich and cup of soup deal. I had the cheddar broccoli soup and the turkey wrap which was served with a house made honey mustard which was very good. My wife chose a deli sandwhich and the the cream of aspargess soup and she was also very happy with her selection . The serving size was perfect for lunch and the price was fair. Since I consider myself a cole slaw snob that is the only thing I would give poor grade to. It look good ,cut like I like ,but it had very little taste. Next time we go we would like to try their muffins they looked great .
(4)Larry H.
Wonderful food. I had the turkey pot pie soup, cole slaw and a slice of bread. Home made, flavorful and filling. Nothing fancy, just good home cooked food. We can't wait to come back
(5)Lucky M.
Yum Chocolate muffin toasted with butter Then spinach greenhouse salad with cherries and chicken and roast beef and mandarin oranges! Yum
(4)Cary D.
I liked everything about my breakfast here. I had the baked oatmeal, and it was delicious. My husband had the asparagus and swiss cheese omelet and liked it as well. We sat outside which was nice, but the interior is really cute. Prices are reasonable as well.
(5)Shannon B.
Went here based on a recommendation from a local store. Our sandwich and soup was very good. Priced a little high, otherwise it would've been 5 stars
(4)Sam C.
We tried this place based on a recommendation from the tourist center. We arrived with a party of eight and they were able to seat us rather quickly. I ordered one of their specials: pot roast sandwich on pretzel bread with cheese, served with cherry mustard. The sandwich tasted good, and was remanisant of good home cooking with a twist. I was curious what cherry mustard would taste like, and was pleasantly surprised. It tasted of a stoneground mustard with just a hint of cherry. It complimented the sandwich well. The atmosphere at the restaurant is casual. Our waiter was nice and responsive, even to the spill we had. You'll be comfortable wearing shorts and a T-shirt. The place is clean but looks worn out, which is why I withheld a star. Go here for great food in a casual atmosphere. No need for a collared shirt here if you don't want. The food has that home cooked taste with a twist of Michigan. I would go back and you should give it a try!
(4)Michelle W.
My husband and I went there for breakfast on Saturday. We don't go out from breakfast often. We were pleasantly surprised at the service and quality of food. We were seated quickly. At the recommendation of our waiter, I ordered the baked oatmeal and my husband ordered the omelette (made his way). They were both excellent!!! One big irritation for us is waiting for the check. They cashed us out quickly even after my husband added one of those huge muffins onto our order before we left. I don't know why we haven't been there more often before but we will be back :)

I've been here before, but it appears that with each subsequent visit, things worsen. On this occasion, I dropped in just before breakfast ended (around 10:15 am) and was seated immediately. I told the waitress not to bring a menu, as I primarily only order eggs Benedict. Today was no different, I ordered the eggs Benedict and the waitress asked if I wanted fruit or hashbrowns. I told her neither, expecting her to ask if I wanted something else, but she said OK and went to get coffee.... I would have ordered toast, but she didn't offer a substitution. The waitress came back with a cup of coffee, which had a few chips in the handle and what looked like a stain on the inner surface of the handle. Upon opening the silverware, I discovered yet more discoloration on the knife and a "water spot" that refused to wipe away. I knew the cream was table-side, but I always enjoy sitting down at a restaurant and using "fresher" cream. A few sips of the coffee later and the eggs were brought out... with fruit! To my amazement, there was fruit included with the eggs - yes, it was but one slice of orange, but it was fruit none the less. The problem I have with fruit, is that most places either use canned fruit or prep the fruit and let it sit. I have found more spoiled fruit on plates that I care to think about. I thought I had made it clear that I wanted no fruit - no means no, correct? The eggs Benedict had far too much Hollandaise sauce poured over top, the english muffin lacked any sort of actual toasting, the eggs were overcooked, and the ham was slightly above warm. There wasn't much flavor to it, except for the overwhelming taste of the Hollandaise sauce. The waitress returned and asked how the eggs were... I must have not said something quick enough as she seemed more interested in filling up my coffee cup. I'm sure she notice I had picked off the orange slice and placed it atop the now-empty creamer container. When I was brought the bill I was quite amazed that they had charged me the full price for the eggs Benedict, when I didn't have the hashbrowns or the fruit. At most any other place, they will either give you another option (even telling you that it might cost more) or take a certain percentage or number off so as to reflect what you are actually ordering. Not here. As such, while the coffee was not totally awful, I chose to leave a tip reflecting my experience and the general disinterest of the waitress in offering any options or even asking if there was something else I wanted after the eggs. I'll never return here again.

Here is a place that appears unique and has interesting flavors. I was hopeful from reviewing their menu, but was disappointed when tasting my breakfast. The Eggs Neptune, poached eggs on crab cakes had so much potential both in concept and presentation. It's the ingredients that will help to deflate your expectations. When it arrives, it's beautifully served and you're fully impressed with these wonderfully poached eggs. They are these perfectly appeared cooked eggs except they were not. They were slightly over cooked so partly not runny. I did ask for the hollandaise sauce to be on the side to allow me to control how much to put on. It was nice of them to accommodate the request. I'm glad I did because not that it was a bad sauce, it was fine, it was just very rich and heavy. The real disappointment was the crab patties. It was fake crab meat! Why? If the menu stated it then I would have set my expectations appropriately. No indications on the menu for what I was about to receive. This could have been a much better dish if they would have used the right stuff. They had a nice sear on the outside of the patty to give it a little crunch and to withstand the sauce and the inside was soft. It's the flavor of the fake meat that does it in for the dish. Next time I'll be willing to try their French Toast.
(2)Noelle V.
Food is okay, not very much quantity given with how much the prices of each dish. Like to go during the summer to utilize their sidewalk cafe.
(3)Ann S.
The staff there are really nice and the prices are good. It's typical diner fare. We got the eggs, bacon, and then split an order of French toast. I really loved the French toast. Perfectly cooked and I'd probably go back just for that.

Seamlessly nested on Front Street in downtown Traverse City, this temple of the luncheon has taken the old staple of soup and sandwich and perfected it. Even the architecture of the exterior resembles the familiar curves of a soup bowl. The iconic tile and large window draws your eye and welcomes you in, the entrance is even recessed as to incite you more. Occasionally the kitchen is so busy cooking up delicious smells it steams up the window forcing you inside to peek at the daily specials and take in the warm, comforting aroma. Once inside, your eye is drawn down the spacious yet cozy restaurant. Before you're able adjust to the large amount of natural light and soothing decor that sets the atmosphere of a true greenhouse, an earnest and happy greeting meets your ear from the friendly proprietors Wally and Joy Green. For 15 years they have been serving great food to people everyday both inside their restaurant and outside on the sidewalk dining area. Walk into an establishment, ask for a reuben, and odds are you will be presented with a hot sandwich composed of corned beef, cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing (or an older gentleman that looks like one of your dad's friends asking "Who are you? What do you want? Why did you call me over?") However, The Green House Cafe doesn't serve everybody else's reuben. Perfectly toasted rye bread allows the flavors of the meat and cheese to ooze and saturate the entirety of the sandwich without becoming soggy. Take your time with this delicatessen delight because the crisp crunch of the first crescendoing bite will remain throughout your enjoyment of this sandwich to the very last crust-ful snap. The heartiness is ideally designed for dunking into a cup of broccoli cheddar, carrot tarragon, or any of Green House Cafe's wonderfully fresh soups. The true star of this sandwich, and its validation to be a signature Traverse City dish, is the cherry sauerkraut. Made in house with real cherries, it is savory and tart which gives an brand new identity to the classic reuben that will cause you to rethink every other sandwich you have ever eaten. This sandwich is bold, impressive, and dripping with flavor that is bonded together by provolone cheese and absolutely requires a return visit. Maybe most impressive about this unique eatery is that in an industry that is known for its short employee turnover, time and time again you are greeted by the same smiling faces of The Green House Cafe's waitstaff. Get to know them because this is THE place to walk in, sit down, and smile as you say "I'll have my regular, please."

Was up in TC for work. Went in for a quick bite and order the chicken salad wrap. I would come in to try something else but this Sammy was not my fav It's a cute place right downtown. I'm sure I'll be back in an order something recommended next time.
(3)Jennifer R.
Meh. I am not sure why this place was so busy. Good service, but the food was just so-so. I had the cherry chicken salad, and it was too sweet. The cole slaw was fresh but not flavorful. Quite noisy. Good location, appreciated the gluten free options.

My boyfriend and I went in for breakfast this morning. I'd been meaning to check this little down shop out for a while. The interior is designed well. A lot of underwater photography covers the walls, the furniture is a modern rustic feel, while adding a bright green and orange theme. Though somewhat eclectic, they manage to maintain a rather inviting atmosphere. Our server was busy. I'm knocking them down a star for his inability to serve us well, or get enough help to serve us in a satisfactory manner. (I work as a server, and believe me, I'm forgiving, but this was a little more than I could accept.) My pancakes were alright. It kind of tasted like they were powdered, and right out of a box, but I'm not sure. I didn't ask. My boyfriend's french toast was good, though. So they kind of counter-acted each other. I'm not sure what their lunch menu looks like, but I saw something about them serving eight different soups a day. (I saw roasted red pepper crab, which I'll have to pop in about sometime soon.) I would go again, but probably not on a regular basis, and I'm not sure they will ever be a top breakfast choice. I'll update this when I've been in for lunch. =)

I read the reviews of my piers. Seemed like a good place to go. It was decent. One of the trends I am noticing in the USA is a push toward fresh, organic food with a trendy atmosphere...That pretty much sums up this place. My food was above average and the service was good. Would I return? Maybe...But if I lived here...Probably.
(3)Katrina S.
Came here for lunch and sat outside. My husband and I both had the spinach salad with chicken. The salad was very good but the portion was very small for the price. Overall good but nothing special and overpriced.
(3)Michael H.
I wanted to like this place more than I did. This is one of many downtown restaurants that presents itself as a foodie favorite in terms of doing things from scratch and featuring fresh local foods; that opposed to the 60s style greasy spoons that used to dominate this area a couple of decades ago and still do outside the city limits. I had breakfast there and was very disappointed with my omelette. Mine was cooked on a griddle rather than a skillet like a credible joint would use. So the eggs turned out just like those greasy spoons these places are supposed to have supplanted, thin and tasteless as an accompaniment to the filling, which was greek and excellent. The hash browns were too thinly sliced and therefore also lacked in flavor. I couldn't tell if they were fresh or frozen. The multi-grain toast was fresh and very good. They only had one type of coffee and it too was bland. So foodie prices for greasy spoon fare. The service wasn't up to diner-fare given that a good breakfast diner waiter always keeps the coffee cup full. That didn't happen here.
(2)Jen M.
Casual, delicious, spacious, child friendly. The broccoli cheese soup rocked and even though I'm not a chicken salad fan, their version with cherries and nuts won me over.
(4)Harold P.
Ok food. Staff is nice and food is delivered quick. I don't like the downtown parking and the price to portion ratio isn't ideal. Good place if you are a vegan and live downtown. On a slow day downtown this is good for a light lunch. I feel this place tries to hard in being unique. Just make good food and serve a good lunch with a smile.
(2)Ty J.
I really really loved this little cafe. We were in TC for a few days and I needed to find a good breakfast restaurant since we were camping and no one wanted to cook breakfast while tent camping. This place is great. Cute little cafe with great decor. They use fresh ingredients from local farms. Fresh not frozen potatoes. We went three times for breakfast and each time our eggs were cooked perfectly. It irritates me when I go to a restaurant for breakfast and they can't cook an egg correctly. If it's a fried egg, sunny side up or over easy it should have the white cooked fully with a runny yolk. There should not be brown on the bottom of it and if there is you have cooked it on too high of heat. These people, they know how to cook eggs. Perfect eggs. The potatoes were perfect as well. Great food and at an amazing price. Very reasonable, awesome food, good service and a clean business. What more can you ask for?
(5)Brody R.
I love this place! Great breakfast each of the 6 times I've eaten here. Eggs Benedict is super. Fresh side of fruit. Sweet waitresses.
(5)Dean K.
I like this place. Very tasty hash browns and friendly staff. They served us in breakfast even though we were technically late. My only complaint is, I ordered poached eggs and they really weren't poached. I think they were put into ramekins and steamed so they came out like little egg cakes. But I'll go back, especially for the price.
(4)Karen S.
I come to northern Michigan every summer and I make it a point to eat at the Green House Café every time, especially around Cherry Festival time. I enjoy the breakfast platters, which are generously sized and delicious. They don't have a ton of tables so show up early and grab one of the coveted sidewalk spots so you can do some serious people watching. This place is very reliable. Green House never fails to deliver with good service and good food. If you are in the area, it is a great place to stop for breakfast.
(4)Jennifer R.
The menu was basic, nothing too unique. However, they bake their breads fresh, the fresh fruit was actually fresh and a great portion size, the cinnamon swirl toast and cracked wheat toast were phenomenal. I had a greek omelette, with spinach, onion, feta, and black olives. It was good, but would have been better with kalamata olives instead of regular black ones. Also could have used some seasoning. Coffee was good, but only plain coffee was available (i would like to see lattes or mochas available). Overall it was a great place and I would definitely return.
(4)Kristin F.
Hearts, love, and butterflies to the broccoli cheddar soup on a cold, blustery Traverse City day. With winter approaching, you bet I will be indulging on this amazing selection from one of my favorite downtown eateries.
(5)Thomas K.
Soups are to die for. Servers are knowledgeable, very helpfully and fun. Nothing on the menu is bad. Great home done high end urban human chow.
(5)Erin S.
Try the French toast, it is amazing!
(5)Lily K.
We were really disappointed in our experience here after reading many great reviews. We were not amused by the decor or the staff T-shirts reading "Let's do a bowl at the Green House Cafe" and "I got crocked at the Green House Cafe." Not clever enough to be funny, just plain trashy. The menu looked ok, nothing too interesting. We ordered the Hash Bash and Neptune Benedict with a side of french toast.. The poached eggs were not cooked properly, the egg whites were still clear. The crab cakes were a whole lot of breading, a little bit of what seemed to be imitation crab and barely any seasoning. The potatoes were also undercooked and overpowered the other ingredients. The french toast was good, but nothing special. We also ordered a side of fruit, also nothing special with a rotten strawberry on top. The waitress seemed completely unconcerned with our problems and did not offer any consolation. We will not return.
(2)Myles J.
We ate breakfast here. The menu was full of unique takes on stable breakfast choices. My gf had some crazy fruit covered french toast mountain and I had crab cake eggs benedict. Our food was so good. The coffee was piping hot and delicious! We're definitely going back next summer!
(5)Meredith E.
Food is great and the staff is so nice! Great fresh food (try the French Onion Soup, it's the best I've ever had!). Everyone can find something they'll like. Many different choices and great combo plates.
(5)L P.
I ate here for breakfast for the first time on my way back home downstate. On the plus-side, I had a nice meal. I ordered an omelette which was good but nothing special. I had plenty of hash browns and really good sourdough toast. My server was attentive and kept my coffee cup full. Always a plus for me. The breakfasts that other people ordered looked good as they were brought out to the dining area past my table. I ordered a lemon poppyseed muffin which was excellent, and huge. Had to take half of it with me. On the downside, the ketchup bottles appeared to be left out and not refrigerated. When I opened mine I noticed the cap (inside and out) was dirty. I'm a stickler for cleanliness in a restaurant. All in all, it's a nice little place to go for breakfast. Next time I'm in town I would be inclined to try a few other places before returning here. But return I will, at some point. In short, an A-OK place.
(3)Chels N.
5 stars for breakfast. Went in without much expectations and was blown away; very inexpensive, lots of variety, perfect for a bite to eat in the morning for a table for 2 or 12. Had a 5 minute wait which wasn't bad. Lots of bakery items to tease you while you wait. Not sure I'll come back for lunch as I wasn't big on the menu, but for breakfast, I'm in.
(5)Adrian S.
Reasonable prices. Soups are average but the sandwiches are excellent. Fresh sprouts! Atmosphere is very casual and kid friendly. Kids can color on the table mat. It can get a bit busy so be prepared to wait on some days.
(4)Mike K.
The one star was for atmosphere. other than that it was the same experience as the last four tries. Shocked at the price for a lunch that was very disappointing. In all fairness they did list the ingredients but the expereance still leaves me feeling cheated and foolish for trying again. I ordered a vegetable soup with a reuben. The soup was mostly cabbage and broth. The "reuben" was nothing like what i would call a reuben. This was a very lite rye. More like plain white. I highly doubt the meat was corned beef. I'm pretty sure it was just ham. and to top it off instead of the signature flavor of sauerkraut and thousand island, they try to impress you with a cherry flavored kraut... not impressed... price tag? $14.50... imagine if I had sat down and then also tipped. I'd be looking at more like $17.50 for THAT...
(1)Lindsay H.
Great little spot! The menu has both the staple basics & some dishes with a creative flair. Try out their cherry sauerkraut for something delicious and interesting! And a plus - great outdoor seating
(4)Cassie R.
My daughter and I ate lunch here today. This is my second visit since moving to TC 4 years ago. I wasn't impressed with The food my first visit and thought I'd give it another try based on friends who like eating there. I ordered a custom salad on the menu that showed up with some if the ingredients that were advertised on the menu missing and the portion was very small for an 11 dollar salad. The quality of the food here is Not impressive to say the least. The service is mediocre. The ambiance may be the only thing this cafe has going for it. I would not recommend the turkey burger either.
(1)Liz K.
Okay, it may look somewhat strange out front and right when you walk in, but sitting in the Green House for lunch is like having a spa experience - light, bright, relaxing! Unlike a spa experience, it is cost effective - lunch for under $10! Great rotating menu of soups, the asparagus parmesan is especially tasty when in season. Their lemon poppy seed muffin is fantastic and insanely huge and dense. Have them warm it up and share it with a friend.
(4)Sue S.
Based on one breakfast, I'm a fan! The "Neptune Eggs" - Eggs Benedict on crab cakes - were excellent, eggs perfectly poached, crab cakes tasty but more breading than I would like, and I loved ordering fruit instead of potatoes. The variety and freshness of the fruit was exceptional. My husband's "Basic Breakfast" was exactly what he ordered, and he loved it. Thank you to the woman walking the little white dog for recommending this place!
(4)Marc V.
I like this place. Healthy yet tasty. Hard to do now in days. Usually pretty easy to get into too even in the summer when it's busy downtown.
(4)Jessica S.
Sandwiches and soups are very good.
(5)Anthony B.
My wife ans I favorite place for breakfast in Traverse City. Although we haven't tried every place in T.C. we have found this place to be the best value so far. Much better than your Bob Evans or Cracker Barrel. The portions are good with lots of hash browns that we just haven't got from any other place yet. You can substitute the hash browns for an awesome fruit plate that very good. The service is outstanding from the servers, they will remember you and your favorite order if you go there allot. It can get kinda loud in there when there busy though so we try to go during off hours or you can sit outside in the summer. So over all ya we like this place, enjoy.
